The Ceiling: Beautifying Protection

The ceiling, with its primary function of sheltering and protecting, is an important symbol within the History of Art. From its origins, this architectural element has been imbued with artistic, philosophical, and decorative functions.

In ancient Egyptian art, ceilings were decorated with reliefs in multiple colors such as green, blue, and yellow, as well as with inlays of glass and fine ceramics. The images projected onto ceilings, columns, and tombstones provide access to Egyptian mythology, their rituals, hymns, and various celebrations. The ceiling represents their worldview.

The significance of the ceiling is reflected across many eras, styles, and constructions. Roman domes, exquisite Renaissance palaces, and Catholic chapels with their frescoes are just a few examples of artistic explorations of ceilings. Just as in Egyptian times, these ceilings translate various conceptions of existence and transcendence.
